BEN VIDA : SOFT SYSTEMS MUSIC

Edition of 50
Hand cut lathe recording on 7" lacquer with laser engraving.
Full color gatefold and broadside insert.

Soft Systems Music uses facial recognition software as a compositional tool to sonify the smile.
Vida then transforms the expressions of smiling actors into what he calls a "soft system”—a blend of the human and algorithmic, in which any subtle motion alters the composition.
This work debuted in his 2016 exhibition, [SMILE ON.] ... [PAUSE] ... [SMILE OFF.] and was later adapted to a live performance for E.S.P. TV's "Lifestyle Guru" event in 2017.

MV Carbon is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work encompasses live performance, sound, film, sculpture, and multi-media installation. Her sound is vitalized by the immediate environment; addressing sonic and psychological feedback through poetry, music, and mechanics. Dense orchestrations are formed, magnifying the ritual embedded within the human mechanism. Rhythmic backgrounds are created with extended techniques, amplified vessels, and gongs; often struck with handmade tools, then sampled and looped in real time. Electric cello is processed through a meticulous chain of effects. Carbon is interested in assembling a fine blend of intensity and tranquility. Chaotic moments of sonic trajectory are leveled with contrasting elements of pure tone. Much time is spent in the recording studio, gathering sounds that are later used as source material in live performances. Reverberation and re-amplification accentuate the spatial characteristics of the performance space. Live fragments of voice and cello are captured on magnetic tape, forming loops, and delicately blending with the shifting parameters of the live mix. Carbon’s cello techniques are drawn from an experimental background, tapping into the conceptual and psychological aspects of music making. Structure is established then shifts, allowing the composition to metamorphosize. Rhythm and emotion weave and unravel, devising a sonic experience and spectacle.
